Dental Implants

Dental implants are the newest way to restore missing teeth. Implants can replace a single tooth, several teeth or all the teeth in your mouth. Implants are the best way to replace missing teeth because the implants look and feel like your natural teeth.
Implants are made of titanium and are well accepted by your body. The implants are placed into the jaw bone and essentially replace the root portion of your tooth. The implants become integrated into the bone by the bone growing into the grooves on the implant. This takes several months to complete. Once the implants are osscointergrated they are as solid as your natural teeth. A second procedure is done to place a post into the implant that your restorative dentist would use to make a crown or a bridge. In the case of dentures the posts are used to hold the dentures in place.
The dental implants procedure is a team effort with the oral surgeon and the restorative dentist working together. A consultation appointment is necessary to see if you are a candidate for implants or to determine what type and how many implants are needed. It is important that there be sufficient bone in which to place the implants. Sometimes, a bone graft may be necessary (see Bone Grafting). Also, there should not be any infection in the mouth where the implants are placed.
Not everyone is a candidate for implants. Patients with Autoimmune disease, periodontal disease, diabetes, or patients on medication such as Fosamax may need alternative treatment. This will be discussed at your consultation appointment.
